Overhead Water Tank
Overhead water tank at Sunderam Park in Jankipuram, Lucknow. A piece of public infrastructure in a residential neighborhood.

It’s a small park. One lap along the outer walking path takes about three to four minutes.

The path passes under the tank in one section. As you approach, four large black pipes come into view, running between pale yellow concrete pillars. Water stored overhead. The tank has a capacity of 1,500 kiloliters (~396,000 US gallons).

The tank disappears behind the foliage and reemerges into view as one laps around the walking path. Suspended overhead. It never quite settles, no matter how many laps one takes.

Some evenings, the tank leaks or overflows. Not dramatically — quietly and just a little. Wet patches on the walking path under it. A drop of water is felt or imagined on the forehead. The body braces.
